Messages from your Board

We are hoping everyone has had a wonderful last month of baseball.     You don't see games canceled due to smoke from Canadian wildfires all that often, but that is the situation we are facing currently.   Hopefully things settle down soon, everyone can stay healthy and safe and we can go back to worrying about rain-outs as the only threat that cancels baseball games.

As we did for last month's newsletter, June's newsletter is mainly filled with the highlights sent to us by our teams.   It is awesome to see what everyone is accomplishing!   You can also find these on our social media and our website during the month as they come in.

We have Tryouts for New Players coming up in early July.    We don't need our current players to attend tryouts but we do need all current players who plan to return to play Jr Phoenix baseball in 2024 to register by July 7th (see Tryout information below).    Please sign up now!

Tryouts for 2024 Teams

The following information was sent out to everyone's registered email address earlier this month.  Please let us know if you have any questions about next year.

2024 Tryout information

This year we will be running our tryouts the same as last year- only NEW players will need to try out.  We believe that existing players have had the opportunity to show their skills during winter training and games to this point. Therefore, NO tryouts will be held for current Jr Phoenix players.

If your player is interested in returning for the 2024 season, they must be registered before July 7th, 2023. There is no cost for this registration. Registration does not guarantee a spot on a team but is required to be considered for a spot.  Players not registered by this date are presumed to not be returning and their spots will be considered open for 2024 teams

If you know of anyone looking to join the Falls Jr Phoenix teams, please pass along the following information to them.  Of note, our league has added a 7U/1st grade division so we are recruiting for incoming 1st graders for the first time this year.  All the details about the tryout process are on our website at : https://www.mfjpbaseball.com/tryouts

We will be having Tryouts on July 9th and July 11th for all NEW players that are interested in trying out.

  • Incoming 1st and  3rd graders will be from 5:00pm -6:15pm

  • Incoming 2nd and 4th graders will be from 6:15pm-7:30pm

  • Incoming 5th -8th graders will be from 7:30pm -8:15pm

After these tryouts have been completed, decisions will be made on team rosters.

The Overall Tryout Timeline is as follows:

Up to July 7: Current  Jr Phoenix Baseball players wishing to return for 2024 need to register

Both Jr Phoenix 8U teams have come away with hardware at their recent tournaments.  The 8U Burgundy team came home with 2nd place at their tournament in West Bend and 8U Gray won the title based on their strong pool play performances at a rain shortened tournament at 5 Diamonds!

Baseball Potpourri

Most of us baseball fans/parents know how to figure out a batting average or on base percentage (OBP) for a hitter or calculate an earned run average (ERA) for a pitcher.   But more and more, baseball teams, reporters and fans are looking at Advanced Metrics like WAR, BABIP, OPS+ and so many more.    Have no idea what these are or why they matter?   Major League Baseball has a great site explaining how these advanced stats are calculated and why teams look at them.  Check out the site here: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/advanced-stats
